Nature and photos from 2013

I've decided I want to do a brief "year in review" type of post...keeping it brief can be tough at times as there are many photos I love. Some of these photos are new and some have been posted before. I started with December and worked my way back...which was weird when it got to Andrew and Heather's reception before it gets to their wedding, etc. Oh, well.

DECEMBER:
Nature has been putting on a show for us this last week with white fog and pogonip and colorful sunsets.

first day of pogonip...my garlic chives aren't too frosty 12-26-13
two days later, there is more pogonip 12-28-13
our house and yard covered in pogonip and fog 12-30-13
a 1/2 mile down the road from us on Perazzo Ln 12-30-13
looking at the field southwest of us at sunset 12-17-13
same field, same day, different vantage point (our yard instead of the street)
same field, different day--I loved the foggy field mystical feeling 12-29-13
I love this photo of Hannah and Alex 12-25-13
 NOVEMBER:
my family: Deni, Kyle, dad and mom, and me (just missing my brother Scott) Vegas 11-22-13
 OCTOBER:
outside of the Reno Temple 10-12-13
fall leaves 10-24-13
SEPTEMBER: (with only 2 choices--this photo and Hannah's selfies--this was an easy month to choose a photo to post. I don't know why we didn't take photos in September)
Alex received 4 merit badges--bringing his total up to 5
AUGUST:
at the beach on vacation in Oregon 8-5-13

sunrise on Perazzo Ln-the corn is as high as the mountain line 8-16-13
 JULY:
family photo at Camp Conery, Lake Almanor, CA--due to their missions, we are missing Eric and Ryan 7-25-13
JUNE:
a perfect summertime activity--cooking cinnamon "rolls" over a campfire 6-23-13
MAY:
my last view of Ryan for 2 years as he enters the MTC in Provo 5-1-13
Heather and Andrew's reception in Mesa 5-3-13
APRIL:
Ryan at the temple 4-19-13
Very Special Day 25 April 2013 Salt Lake City, Utah
MARCH:
Hannah was inducted into the National Honor Society 3-27-13
And that's where my photos end. I don't have any photos in January and February since my camera was broken for a few months and it didn't get repaired until March.

It's been a wonderful year full of good memories. I'm expecting the same from 2014. Happy New Year everyone!

'Tis the Season...

'Tis the season...for Christmas caroling (Dec 18th). The Perazzo clan carols and delivers cookies to our neighbors each year. We used to sing "Away in a Manger" and then "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." The last few years we've sung "Silent Night" in place of "Away in a Manger." This year we tried to sing "Away in a Manger" again, but with 3 different versions of music for it (the one I grew up with, the one in the LDS Hymn Book, and the one in the LDS Primary Children's Songbook), we were singing different tunes at the same time (even though we practiced beforehand). We switched to "Silent Night" after a few houses since we just couldn't seem to all sing the same tune. It was really quite comical and helped to make the evening more memorable.

'Tis the season...for piano recitals (Dec 19th). Alex played in his last recital on the 19th. He has been wanting to quit taking piano for quite a while now, so we are finally allowing him to stop--with the lessons, not with the playing. He played well and seemed to enjoy the recital.

'Tis the season...for celebrating my parents' anniversary (Dec 20th). They have been married 57 years now. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Sandwinds Restaurant.

'Tis the season...for show and tell--showing Grandma and Grandpa P what clothes (or other items) the kids bought with the money they were given (Dec 23rd).
Grandpa J in the background
tut tut it looks like rain
'Tis the season...for receiving Christmas cards, which is especially wonderful when it's a photocard from one of your sons serving a mission. BTW, Ryan is currently in Many, Louisiana (pronounced Man-ee).

'Tis the season...for putting together a Christmas/Winter puzzle to pass the time (Dec 24th).
Alex with Grandma J
'Tis the season...for traditions. Like the Jervis/New England tradition of lighting a bayberry candle at sunset on Christmas Eve (4:36 pm in Fallon) and letting it burn itself out to bring good luck in the coming year.
Alex did the honors this year and lit the candle
at bedtime there was still a few hours left of candle
'Tis the season...for the tree on Christmas Eve. Our star doesn't go on top of the tree until Christmas Eve. I love how the lights reflect on the windows and the floor.

'Tis the season...for wintery weather. It was gorgeous outside on Christmas morning with all the fog.

'Tis the season...for more traditions (Dec 25th). Like finding the paper maché pickle that Eric made in elementary school that's been hidden in the tree. The first one to find it gets to be the first to wear the santa hat, grab a gift from under the tree, and deliver the gift. Then the receiver of the gift, after putting on the santa hat and opening the gift, grabs another gift and delivers it along with the santa hat to the next recipient. And so on.
Alex and Hannah hunted for a long time for the pickle before Glen had to step in and find it
my dad searching hard for a gift to deliver to someone
Alex's turn
Hannah's turn
Glen always records all the gifts, recipients, and givers in his journal
my mom having a hard time opening the plastic package on her gift (a radio)
my dad, who flies RC airplanes, with his new hoodie (a week after he smashed his new plane to smithereens)
mom and dad with their dog Cricket
'Tis the season...for fun gifts. I had ordered a cow earflap hat online for Hannah, but then I saw a multi-colored (Bob Marley) cow earflap hat in town. I had to get the 2nd one because I really like it more...and it's a good thing because the one I ordered online turned out to be a child-sized hat.
not quite the right size
aaaah, much better
The assorted chocolate bar flavors from around the world from Geoff are almost too cute to eat, but I'm sure I'll enjoy every bite (as will Glen as it's for the both of us). Hannah gave me the chicken eyeglass holder (isn't it a riot!?). Ryan sent "Slap Ya MaMa" cajun seasoning mix from Louisiana. Too funny. (supposedly the mama gets a congratulatory slap on the back after serving another delicious dish seasoned just right)

'Tis the season...for talking to our 2 missionaries on the phone! We had to pause our gift opening for almost 2 hours to talk to our missionaries. Ryan called from 9-10 am (his mission had an hour to speak) and Eric called from 10-10:40 (his mission was given 40 minutes to talk since there were so many missionaries to share so few phones). The first minute or 2 of Eric's call, Ryan was on a cell phone and we held the 2 phones together so Eric and Ryan could say "hi" to each other. It was wonderful to talk to them and they are both doing well.
2 gifts from Ryan: "Why I Live in Louisiana 101 Dang Good Reasons" and "Cajun Night Before Christmas"
Grandma and Grandpa P were also able to be here for the calls

'Tis the season...to make and deliver treats (and therefore have a messy kitchen). Hannah made a bunch of treats to share.

And lastly and best of all: 'Tis the season...to enjoy our families and remember the birth of Christ and that it is through Him, His Atonement, and His gospel that we can live together forever as families.

benign, brr, birthday and other things that don't start with a "b"

Monday:
The good news for the week (though you didn't know there was a possibility of bad news): my sister's tumor is benign!!! Yea!!!

Tuesday:
Found out that Ryan is not being transferred, though his mission president had hinted that he might be. So he's in Many, LA  for the holidays.

For my birthday this year, I used my birthday money that I had saved from last year (I can be patient at times) and combined it with this year's to buy stained glass crafting supplies (remember I took that class a year ago?). Those of you who follow me on Pinterest probably won't be surprised by that, seeing the number of stained glass items I've pinned lately. I've made 4 pieces so far, but haven't finished them because I'm still missing a few supplies. But on Tuesday, I taught Hannah the basics:
cutting the glass

grinding the glass

putting copper foil on the edges

soldering the pieces together

Hannah's finished tree (after adding embellishments, of course)
my first piece that still needs a hanger

I went Christmas caroling with our youth group on Tuesday. It was FREEZING outside, but since the wind wasn't blowing, it wasn't too bad and was really kind of fun. The Bishop drove his big bus, which had Christmas lights hanging in the window and there were about 33 of us who unloaded off and loaded onto the bus at each stop. Then, of course, we had hot chocolate and doughnuts after spreading good cheer through caroling.

Wednesday:
It was Mom P's birthday and she just turned 80. We had had a little surprise party for her when Teresa and her family were visiting, but we wound up over there for cake, ice cream, pie, and some fun conversation. Happy Birthday Mom!

(Thursday:
There really isn't any Thursday news, but since it's the only day of the week that didn't get mentioned, I thought I'd add it and say that I saw the D.A.R.E. presentation 3 times while subbing--and 3 more times on Friday, too--and I now know how to refuse, explain, and avoid situations that involve me being asked to do something I don't want to do.)

Friday:
We had the ward Christmas party. The gingerbread houses the girls had made last week looked amazing on the tables. The food was fabulous. The children's nativity was adorable. Good people were there to surround us. Excellent party.

Saturday:
Eric got to go to the Christmas Concert on Temple Square with singer Deborah Voigt and actor John Rhys-Davies Saturday night. I heard it was really good from others. Hope he enjoyed it. His new assignment for his mission is dealing with the Iowa non-population census records. Plus he's indexing and singing in a concert with his Elijah Choir, but he doesn't say when the concert is.

The tree has been up since last Saturday and the lights since Monday, but we finally got the tree decorated. It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

my mini-village got lit for the first time this year, usually it just sits there
Last night we went to see The Forgotten Carols in Fernley. I had read the book a few years ago, but didn't really know the music. I think I'm going to have to get a CD of it. It's a musical where a nurse takes care of an old man who claims to have been alive since the time of Christ's birth and had a chance to talk to the inn keeper who had no room, a shepherd who slept through the angels announcement of Christ's birth, a woman who held the baby Jesus, etc. For each character, there is a song that tells that side of the story. Beautiful.

Sunday:
I had a dream this morning that I was playing the organ at church and I kept messing up...playing when I wasn't supposed to (I couldn't hear the man conducting) and then going to play the wrong song (well, I didn't know they had changed the song!).

In the dream, we had a real intermission in our church meeting and I found out this unknown man in charge was asking around trying to find someone to replace me, because our church service was being broadcast and I was ruining the music.

So, I was trying to explain to people around me what the problems are. And they are the reasons why my organ playing hasn't gone as smoothly these last 2 times:

This quarter, I did not choose my own music. It was chosen for me. I had the right to ask for changes, but I didn't. I said that I was rough on some of the songs, but I thought I would have the kinks worked out by the time I had to play. I apparently didn't practice enough, because some kinks weren't worked out and I messed up. My big prayer when I play is that I don't detract from the Spirit and I think January through September my prayer was answered, so I am pleased with those months.

One of my goofs last month was I lost my place...when I play, I sing the first verse of the song in my head as I play and it helps me track the music, only I got off and when the congregation was singing the 2nd or 3rd verse, I couldn't find the place in the hymn, so I just couldn't play for several measures until I figured out where they were.

So, I have chosen my hymns for the next quarter. I really do want to improve, so I don't always choose things I can already play 100%. I am inspired by those around me who so willingly serve and who improve their talents and don't just skate by on what they already knew. Thanks Annalee. You are a great example in so many areas.
