quick trip to Vegas
Hannah and I had a great trip down to Vegas. We got to see my parents, my sister, her husband, 2 of her sons, one of her daughters-in-law, and imported from New Hampshire, my brother. We went on Wednesday and came home on Friday. It was short and sweet and it was so much fun to be with them. In the past almost 25 years since I've been married, I think I've only seen Kyle 5-6 times. Wish he lived closer.
My nephew Cory, his wife Amanda, my nephew Danny, and my brother Kyle (I took several pictures and in each one of them, at least one person had "problems," so sorry Kyle, but you're the one who gets the funny picture posted on my blog.

Time-Share, Glen, my brother Kyle, and Eric's new assignment
Time-Share
I went to opening night of Time-Share on Friday night as well as last night's show. They are putting it on again next Friday and Saturday, too, so come if you can.
Glen had put the play on back in December 2006 when Andrew and Adam were juniors in high school. We had seen it performed in Utah in January of 2006 at the annual thespian conference and liked it so much, we brought it to Fallon. So, I had seen it twice before, though it was half-way through opening night before I remembered how it ended.
Anyway, they did a great job. I brought Alex with me last night. He laughed a lot, too. The story is about 6 groups of people showing up at a time-share thinking they'll have it all to themselves...and one of the groups is a criminal and a dead body.
The cast of characters include brother and sister, Clayton (high school student) and Loren (college student). Their family owns the time-share for the 2nd week in December, when this story takes place. Clayton and his friend Dave skipped school to go to the condo. Loren and her friend Marni are taking a break from college to escape Marni's boyfriend, Brayden. Some other characters are a professional skier and his strict trainer/grandparent, as well as Clayton and Loren's housekeeper and her dog, and then their mother. Plus the spy/murderer. And a dead body.
In the 2006 version, Andrew played Dave, the friend. Adam played Brayden, Marni's boyfriend. And Glen played Pappa, who was the grandfather of the Finnish professional skier, Heikke. In the 2013 version, though, Heikke has his grandmother, Mamma, as his trainer. And Hannah is playing Marni.
My favorite lines (which will probably not be as funny as if you had seen the play, but here goes):
Clayton (played by Jared Huston): Is this disrespectful? I don't know. (as he is checking to see if the man whose body they found in the closet is dead and rigor mortis has already set it)
Heikke Valonen (played by Dustin Gross) to his Grandma when she's going to the lodge and she asks him if there's anything she can get for him there: How about a Heidi...., or a Mindy, or a Sunny hanging around the lodge. No offense to you, but some female company would be good therapy. I'm sure if you told her that I'm injured, and that I'm really nice... [this is before they find out they are not alone in the condo, of course]
Mamma Valonen (played by Madeline Robbins): You're not that injured and I really don't think that you're that nice.
Heikki Valonen, after being chastised for being found in the hot tub by an unsuspecting Loren and explaining that he couldn't find his suitcase with his swimsuit in it: And I prefer to think of it as decent exposure. [now knowing they are not alone in the condo]
Loren (played by Niya Kelsey) to Heikke after they almost kissed: Let's pretend that didn't happen.
Heikke's reply: Uh, actually, I don't think it did happen.
Blood Drive
Just to put a plug in for my husband, he has been spending long hours at school (like 13-15 hour days for the last few weeks). Been busy--with school, with scouts, with church. In the middle of putting on a play, he also signed up to host a blood drive with his NHS students at our church building. Yesterday, they got 28 pints of blood and their goal had been only 23. Way to go!
I don't know how he does it. I sub for 8 hours and come home and it's literally (and I do mean literally) all I can do to make dinner (and half the time I don't seem to do that either). Seriously. OK. Maybe it's not all I can do--it's just all I do?
My friend told me recently that while she was getting her hair done the lady asked her if she knew Glen. My friend kind of held her breath not knowing what was going to come next. The woman then proceeded to say what a nice man Glen was. My friend agreed. So do I. When the kids were little it was hard for me to have him gone, but the kids aren't little any more and I'm so glad he can participate in so many great things. And participate with our kids...I love it when our kids are in a play!
However, I'm glad that this play is almost over and we'll be seeing more of him.

Eric's emails are a very interesting read, usually. And often hard to follow. I thought his new assignment as a Young Missionary in the Family and Church History Headquarter's Mission sounded fascinating. It deals with people who submit names to the family tree at familysearch that need to be blocked (Donald Duck? really???). Hope you can follow along well enough:
I've got sort of a new assignment in Data Quality, something sort of out-of-the-ordinary for what I usually do...
I
usually work with FamilySearch while everyone else in DQ works on
FamilyTree, but being out of assignments they've (temporarily?) assigned
me this project. There's this "famous people" list they're trying to
assemble, aiming at being as comprehensive and exhaustive as possible,
so that they system automatically knows if a patron's being naughty,
trying to submit the name of someone they shouldn't. For example, if I'm
remembering the figure right, 'first-man' Adam's name is added to the
system something like twice a day, every day. Like seriously. There are
also fictional people added to the system often; Donald Duck seems to be
an inextricably popular one, though I've got no numbers on him. So,
Monday this week, I was assigned to work on Project Famous Names,
subsection fiction, sub-subsection mythology. All of mythology, like,
all the myths. Hmmm.

With normal famous names, there's definitive biography
and stuff, birth-dates and parents and everything to add so that the
system can recognize it, so I'd reckon it's probably pretty easy. With
mythology it's nowhere near that clean, and things get a lot hinkier
from there. Birth and death dates and places generally go out of the
window, and though there's still usually genealogical information about
the Greek pantheon sometimes the myths outright contradict each other,
so I've got to catch all the variations. Like, is Eros a primordial
deity sprung forth from Chaos itself, or is he the son of Aphrodite? My
sources say, both. But then there are more intriguing questions- Is
Kokopelli married? Is Ometeotl male or female (and did the Aztecs even
believe in it)? There's this one dude in Norse myth who had nine (nine!)
mothers (generally agreed to be symbolic of waves of the sea), so I'm
not even sure how I'm going to touch that. And I don't know if people
would be adding Pegasus or anything; the closest thing I've yet come to
the bestiary is Egyptian gods and trickster shapeshifters and the odd
centaur whose lineage is known. Though I have been considering adding
ol' Coyote there...
The legendary characters project is a separate list
from the mythological characters one, and though I suppose there's no
harm in a name being double-barred I'm still so far skirting clear of
where the line gets blurry. Which it does a lot in Celtic myth, which is
heavily based off of Roman anyway so I don't even know what I'm going
to do there.
Each name, with all its info, is added one at a time
and sent off to some database somewhere. So far I've only been working
assembling a group of names without sending names off, adding more
information if I find it later about parents and spouses. Sometimes, I
get actual birth and death places- they know exactly where Aphrodite
came out out the sea, for instance, and we all know that, say, Hector
and Achilles died at Troy. It's alright to put only the name if none of
the other information is known, but I'm still trying to scrounge up as
much as I can before I submit anything.

chance meetings, typhoons, and plays and more
Headline News:
Shelly update!
Shelly was in a sedated coma and they had a hard time getting her to wake up from it. It took many days, but she finally woke up from her coma and is making progress, though she is jaundiced and has a fever. Sam says she is weak but getting stronger. He was told 3 different times while she was sedated that she wouldn't make it. We are so glad that she fooled the doctors. Sam credits the Lord (and so do we) for answering our fasting and prayers the way we were hoping as to what brought her through.
Michael and Jiaxin bump into each other. Jiaxin flies to Cali on Tuesday.
Michael has been praying everyday that he would get a chance to see Jiaxin in the MTC...but since Jiaxin was only going to be there for 3 weeks and they are at 2 different MTC campuses (Michael at the NW corner of BYU and Jiaxin at the NE corner), the weekly devotional was thought to be their only chance to meet up. Well, Michael had to go to the other campus in order to get one more vaccination shot. When they were done, he had a strong feeling to go and eat in their cafeteria. This is what happened in Michael's words:
So were getting our food and when I look up I see Jason. I just yelled out his name and he turns and starts running towards me! I almost literally dropped my tray. Were in the middle of everything and everyone and were just embracing each other in a much needed hug. Jason started crying into my shoulder saying how glad he was to see me because he leaves [Tuesday]. He leaves [Tuesday} and other than this devotional, I probably would not have seen him. By this time I had started tearing up. He told me that he missed home and everyone there. We literally just stood there talking and crying and hugging and by this time my companion and two of our sisters were there and met him. I have talked so much about him to my district and I am SO HAPPY I got to see him. When he had to go I literally just turned to my companion and my sisters and cried. It was hard to see him walk away but I'm glad I got to see him and hope to see him on Sunday before he leaves.
This is what Jiaxin's emails to us said about the encounter (he replied to 2 different emails, so we got 2 responses):
I totally cried when I saw Michael during lunch. I told him that I miss home, and he said me too. We will be alright, and I will see him again at the choir this Sunday for the last time within 2 yrs.
and the 2nd email:
He came to the Main Campus for some immunizations, so they stayed here for lunch. I was barely done with my lunch and he just walked by me and shouted Jason really loud. I was surprised. He told me that he has been praying everyday to see me. I guess his prayers have been answered very well. I'm leaving on this coming Tuesday morning at 4:30, so don't mail any letters to the MTC, just mail it to my mission address from now.
If you know Jiaxin, please take time to drop him a note. He needs all the support he can get since no one in his family is a member of our church.

Typhoon hits the Philippines.
This is my sister's youngest boy, Jacob. He roomed with Michael, Jiaxin, and Ryan at BYU-I winter semester and is currently serving his mission in the Philippines. He is on an island that was in the path of the super-typhoon Haiyan. Although his island, Busuanga, received heavy damage, all missionaries are safe and accounted for. :)
Below is a map with Coron, the city on Busuanga that Jake is in, marked with a purple pin. Below this map is a small map of the typhoon's path (if I blow it up, it gets too fuzzy). Can you tell that the typhoon passed right over Coron?
Dream job comes to an end.
After 7 weeks of being Mrs. McGowan (math), I will be free lance again. She has healed from her surgery and is ready to go back to work. Next week I am already going to be Mrs. Moore (ag science) and Mrs. Wright (resource science and reading/English). Sigh. I will have to interpret lesson plans again. I will have to take roll again. I will have to deal with students I don't know again. I will miss being the help and now will have to be in charge again. It really was a dream job, subbing for Mrs. McGowan. Several of the students were sad to see me go, which made me feel good.
RIP Pete.
Pete was 9 1/2 years old when he quietly passed away on Saturday, November 6th. My plan had been to take a similar photo as the one below before Ryan left on his mission because I knew the chances weren't good for Pete to be around when Ryan returned. I forgot to get that photo. :( So here's Pete as a youngster with a 10 year old Ryan. Pete learned to talk...just not in recognizable words. He would repeat the same things over, so you knew he was saying something, you just couldn't figure out what it was. He did occasionally say "pretty bird" but my family didn't believe me when I said that what he was saying. Years ago the kids used to play a Nintendo 64. Pete picked up one of the weird noises the game made, and that was recognizable. I will miss talking to you Pete, but I won't miss cleaning up the little feathers and seed hulls that would escape from your cage.

Neat measuring trick from Penny
There is a lady that Glen helps occasionally as she is single and not in the best of health. In order to thank him for all he has done, she came over Friday night and cooked us dinner (Mediterranean stew). It was quite good. Anyway, she taught us a trick that I love that I want to share. She's had a varied life and she used to draft for McDonnell Douglas. If you need to divide your paper into columns or rows or make a table, this is the way to make evenly spaced sections. Of course, with computers that can make their own tables, this isn't as useful as it used to be, but I still think it's a really neat trick. (and maybe every one older than I am already knows this trick...but it was new to me)
Decide how many sections you need. We are going to make a 5 x 9 table.
So we need 9 rows on the 8 1/2" side of the paper. Instead of taking 21 3/5 cm or 8 1/2" and dividing it by 9 and trying to get even rows, like I used to try and do, I now know to just put the zero of the ruler at the left edge of my sheet of paper and angle the ruler so that I have the number of rows that I want (9, in this case) on the opposite edge of the paper. I mark each inch.
I go ahead and move the ruler down the paper and make a second set of dots so I can line up my ruler along the 2 dots to make a straight line. When I do this, I have 9 evenly spaced rows.
Now, I want to finish my table by adding 5 columns to go with the 9 rows. I moved my ruler so that instead of using inches, I was now using cm. I put the 0 on the left side of my paper and chose 30 cm for the right side and then marked every 6 cm. (6 x 5 = 30). (Use whatever works for your size paper and the markings on your ruler.) I slid my ruler down the page and repeated the process and made a 2nd set of dots. I then laid the edge of my ruler along the dots and drew my line and I wound up with a 5 x 9 grid/table where the spaces are the same size.

You can use the centimeter or inch side, whatever will give you the number of columns you want. Mark your numbers. Then draw your lines. It takes much less math than the other system I used to use.

Neat measuring trick from Penny
There is a lady that Glen helps occasionally as she is single and not in the best of health. In order to thank him for all he has done, she came over Friday night and cooked us dinner (Mediterranean stew). It was quite good. Anyway, she taught us a trick that I love that I want to share. She's had a varied life and she used to draft for McDonnell Douglas. If you need to divide your paper into columns or rows or make a table, this is the way to make evenly spaced sections. Of course, with computers that can make their own tables, this isn't as useful as it used to be, but I still think it's a really neat trick. (and maybe every one older than I am already knows this trick...but it was new to me)
Decide how many sections you need. We are going to make a 5 x 9 table.
So we need 9 rows on the 8 1/2" side of the paper. Instead of taking 21 3/5 cm or 8 1/2" and dividing it by 9 and trying to get even rows, like I used to try and do, I now know to just put the zero of the ruler at the left edge of my sheet of paper and angle the ruler so that I have the number of rows that I want (9, in this case) on the opposite edge of the paper. I mark each inch.
Now, I want to finish my table by adding 5 columns to go with the 9 rows. I moved my ruler so that instead of using inches, I was now using cm. I put the 0 on the left side of my paper and chose 30 cm for the right side and then marked every 6 cm. (6 x 5 = 30). (Use whatever works for your size paper and the markings on your ruler.) I slid my ruler down the page and repeated the process and made a 2nd set of dots. I then laid the edge of my ruler along the dots and drew my line and I wound up with a 5 x 9 grid/table where the spaces are the same size.

You can use the centimeter or inch side, whatever will give you the number of columns you want. Mark your numbers. Then draw your lines. It takes much less math than the other system I used to use.

Halloween, Elder Zhao, Ryan's 1/4th done, Hannah's hair, and the Cooking Show
First off, our friend, Shelly, is still in the hospital and sedated. Our continued thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. There is a fundraiser on Monday November 5th for her. It's a spaghetti feed at CCMS at 5:30, if you want to come. I was told there was a little bit of improvement seen in her on Friday.

It was another full week for us.
Tuesday gave us a thrill when it snowed for about 4 hours in the morning. It stopped snowing around noon and within 30-60 minutes, most of the snow had melted. I was sad that I didn't have the opportunity to take a photo, but I was able to borrow a photo. I love this photo.
Tuesday night was our ward's Trunk or Treat night and chili cook off. I don't have a photo of me, but Alex and I did the same thing...wore pajamas, a robe, and put Got 2B Glued in our hair so it was sticking out. Hannah and Glen came from play practice and just went as themselves.
Ryan hit his 6 month mark on Friday, November 1st. It's so hard to believe that his mission is 1/4th over! Since we haven't received any photos of him since July, this older photo will have to do.
Hannah got her haircut on Saturday. Her friend, Jenna, who's in beauty school, did the cutting. We think it turned out great. (I took this photo from Jenna's facebook page and will replace it with a better one once we have one.)
DonNell's birthday was in October, but she chose her birthday celebration to be us attending the Taste of Home Cooking Show in Reno on Saturday November 2nd. We've attended the show in past years and it's always a lot of fun. Sadly this year none of us won any of the door prizes, but we have some delicious-sounding recipes we want to try out.
After the show, we went out to eat at a little out of the way café--Opa's Café in Reno. They serve Greek and Italian food and it was delicious--especially their tzatziki sauce. We need to go back again and try out some other items on the menu that we were forced to leave behind this trip. Like the mousaka. And eggplant parmesan. And the pastitsio...

The other big thing to happen on Tuesday night was that Jiaxin was set
apart as a missionary. He entered the MTC on Wednesday and will be there
until about November 20th when he and his companion will head out to Arcadia, California.
