Graciela, who came in 1st; Hannah; Jennifer, who came in 2nd
All 13 participants--the boy in red in front, Ralston, came in 3rd
KNPB filmed the competition and afterwards each had to say what they liked best about it
Hannah actually had opposition in her bid to be the Student Body Secretary next year (the Pres, VP, and Treasurer ran unopposed). We are happy to say that she won and will be serving with her good friends, Garrett, Dylan, and Paolo.
I also found out that Hannah was accepted into the National Honor Society this year--I guess that Glen, as NHS advisor, knew last week, but didn't share with us (and rightly so--I'm not complaining). It was a neat year--all the applicants were accepted. Glen said that had never happened before.
On Wednesday, Hannah went early to the Nevada Acting Conference (or whatever it's called) in Henderson, Nevada. Hannah and Jared were running for a place on the Student Thespian Officers board (neither got chosen, though), with Dustin needing to be there early because he was one of the opening numbers for the conference. Glen and the others went on Thursday for the start of the conference.
Hannah was in the musical number "They Both Reached for the Gun" from Chicago. Click here to see the clip from the movie. They earned a superior rating, but they did not showcase (so they did really well but not really, really well).
Hannah had to leave before it was over, however. Saturday morning Glen took Hannah to the Vegas airport and she flew in to the Reno airport where I picked her up and took her to Nevada's Poetry Out Loud State competition. Thirteen out of 16 NV counties were represented. Grandma and Grandpa came to cheer her on.
Each contestant was asked to provide a bio for the program. This is what Hannah submitted:
Hannah Perazzo has lived in the same house in Fallon, Nevada for all her seventeen years of existence. Like most humans, Hannah was born a baby. Her life now is best described as "jack of all trades; master of none," as she plays six instruments and tennis, is an actress, ballerina, artist, professional singer* and church youth leader, and serves on the Student Council. She has no plans for the future except to be a princess (lack of princes is the cause of her dream's demise). Hannah thanks her parents, Glen & Beth Perazzo; her adventure buddy and inspiration, Geoff Humildad; her motivator and pizza provider, Ms. Pace; the greatest poet, Hannah Lindsay; and her oldest brother Andrew Perazzo; along with her other brothers, Ryan, Eric and Alexander.
*when I mentioned to Hannah that I didn't know she was a professional singer, I thought she was going to say someone paid her a quarter for singing once, but she didn't know what I was talking about...apparently when she edited something out while getting her bio ready, she didn't edit it completely out and left "professionally" in (but she doesn't remember what she was going to say she did professionally. hmm. I'd like to know what it was).
So, all 13 gave their first poem, then their second poem. Hannah did one of the same ones from the Churchill county competition (April Love by Ernest Dowson), but instead of Fire and Ice by Robert Frost, she did Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy.
Then the 3 finalists were chosen. I made my guess of 3 and I got 2 of them right. It was interesting to note that none of the 3 came from Vegas or the Reno area. They were: 1st place-Graciela Maya-Joseph of Elko county, 2nd place-Jennifer Simon of Nye county, and 3rd place-Ralston Pederson of Lyon county.
After we got back from Reno, Alex, Hannah, and I went to Standards Night at church. Hannah also had a talent show at the school and had a church dance. Glen was traveling home from Henderson. So, it was a very busy day. And week.
April Love by Ernest Dowson
We have walked in Love's land a little way,
We have learnt his lesson a little while,
And shall we not part at the end of day,
With a sigh, a smile?
A little while in the shine of the sun,
We were twined together, joined lips, forgot
How the shadows fall when the day is done,
And when Love is not.
We have made no vows--there will none be broke,
Our love was free as the wind on the hill,
There was no word said we need wish unspoke,
We have wrought no ill.
So shall we not part at the end of day,
Who have loved and lingered a little while,
Join lips for the last time, go our way,
With a sigh, a smile?
Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy
We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers
And sitting by desolate streams;
World losers and world forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.
With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world’s great cities.
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire’s glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song’s measure
Can trample an empire down.
We, in the ages lying
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself with our mirth;
And o’erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world’s worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.
